MIND + BODY

BODY-CENTERED PSYCHOTHERAPY

WHAT IS BODY-CENTERED PSYCHOTHERAPY?

Body-centered psychotherapy is also known as somatic psychotherapy. “Soma” is the Greek term signifying the body and mind are one living unit. In this field of work, the body is recognized as central for self-awareness and includes mindfulness of body sensation as the primary role in mental health and therapeutic interventions. By utilizing both the wisdom of the mind and the body, the approach can offer healing on a holistic level. Body-centered psychotherapy practices can be a powerful avenue to allow unconscious behaviors and habitual patterns to surface and heal an individual’s deeply held core material and trauma.

Sensorimotor Psychotherapy is a specific body-centered modality and trauma based treatment therapy that integrates body and sensation processing with cognitive and emotional processing. The body is recognized as the primary avenue for processing trauma and allows for presence of mind-body connection in order to heal trauma. Many times trauma symptoms get stuck and reside in the body as images, sounds, smells, sensations, pain, constriction, numbing, and immobility. This unresolved trauma results in an individual to be incapable of thinking clearly and have the ability to manage different emotional states. Sensorimotor Psychotherapy is a modality that allows one to mindfully track body sensation and movement. This practice cultivates presence by tracking moment-to-moment body sensations and thoughts. It encourages an individual’s awareness and presence resulting in the ability to holistically self-regulate when feeling overwhelmed, distressed, or triggered.

I provide an individualized and integrative approach through body-oriented and mindfulness practices, to support you and your journey to connect more fully and deeply to your fullest potential.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF BODY- PSYCHOTHERAPY VS. TALK THERAPY?

Often we are not aware of our physical sensations and emotional disturbance and how they keep us recapitulating unhealthy habits and defenses. When triggered, we react immediately due to how we are conditioned and often we don’t have the tools to manage our reactions in the present moment. Body-centered psychotherapy allows an individual to practice ways of becoming more present. It increases an individual’s self-awareness around how their body communicates non-verbally when activated and what helps them feel more calm and grounded. The result is enhanced self-awareness and consciousness; giving one choice to be empowered to make healthy decisions and take healthy actions in the here and now.

EMDR Therapy

WHAT IS IT?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidenced based trauma therapy that integrates elements of somatic awareness, body experiences, cognitive therapy, and mindfulness to help people heal from life disturbing experiences and traumatic events. EMDR Therapy is a recommended treatment by several mental health organizations around the world for healing PTSD and other life disturbing experiences such as addiction, anxiety, depression, chronic pain, and much more. EMDR is a psychotherapeutic method that can effectively relieve stuck and overwhelming experiences by transforming how traumatic memories are stored in the brain and body. EMDR allows incomplete or “stuck” experiences to be safely processed and integrated by reducing the disturbance of traumatic memories so that people can envision and embody a more positive future.

WHY IS EMDR THERAPY SUCH A SUCCESSFUL TRAUMA TREATMENT?

EMDR not only addresses traumatic events, but also any disturbing experience that has affected an individual’s life that they may not consider as “trauma.” As a traumatic memory is integrated, perceptions of the experience spontaneously shift, negative beliefs give way to a more positive perspective, the body releases old tensions, and emotions ease. Symptoms of acute anxiety, shame, nightmares, diminish or disappear. Your sense of self reorganizes to be consistent with who you are today. EMDR has been shown to be helpful with individuals experiencing addiction, anxiety, depression, chronic pain, and much more.

RESULTS

EMDR Therapy generates incredible results and transforms lives through deep healing experiences. The treatment of EMDR Therapy creates the opportunity for you to embark on a journey to face your fears and understand your wounds in a holistic, compassionate, and authentic manner. EMDR is an 8 phase modality that often shows positive results within months of starting treatment and individuals often report lasting and very satisfactory results.

PACT Therapy

WHAT IS PACT?

PACT stands for A Psychobiological Approach to Couple Therapy®. I will use the PACT principles to guide you in overcoming challenges you face as a couple.

PACT was developed out of exciting, cutting-edge research in three areas.

The first is neuroscience, the study of the human brain. Understanding how the brain works provides a physiological basis for understanding how people act and react within relationships. In a nutshell, some areas of your brain are wired to reduce threat and danger and seek security, while others are geared to establish mutuality and loving connection.

The second is attachment theory, which explains the biological need to bond with others. Experiences in early relationships create a blueprint that informs the sense of safety and security you bring to adult relationships. Insecurities that have been carried through life can wreak havoc for a couple if these issues are not resolved.

The third area is the biology of human arousal—meaning the moment-to-moment ability to manage one’s energy, alertness, and readiness to engage. It isn’t necessary to understand the scientific basis of PACT to realize its benefits.

WHAT DOES A PACT SESSION LOOK LIKE?

Your experience during a PACT session may differ somewhat from what you would experience in other forms of couple therapy. Key features of this approach include:

  • I will focus on moment-to-moment shifts in your face, body, and voice, and ask you to pay close attention to these as a couple.

  • I will create experiences similar to those troubling your relationship and help you work through them in real time during the session.

  • PACT tends to require fewer sessions than do other forms of couple therapy.

  • PACT sessions often exceed the 50-min hour and may last as long as 3–6 hours. Longer times allow for the in-depth work of PACT.

  • I may videotape sessions to provide immediate feedback to you.

WHY SHOULD I CHOOSE PACT OVER OTHER COUPLES THERAPY APPROACHES?
